A Grand Slam for Inclusion: Sensory-Friendly Night with the Harrisburg Senators

Celebrating community, connection, and a game day experience designed so every family could feel welcome and included.

We were honored to take part in the first-ever Harrisburg Senators Sensory-Friendly Night as the Community Organization of the Game. From early planning conversations to the event itself, the experience reflected a shared commitment to inclusion, accessibility, and meaningful community connection.

Intentional Planning for an Inclusive Event

In the lead-up to the event, we were excited to provide planning suggestions to support inclusion and awareness. These conversations helped shape an experience designed with families in mind, including adjusted sound and lighting, quiet spaces, sensory kits, and a Community Resource Fair to connect families with helpful supports and services.

Our suggestions were intentional, with the goal of:

  • Removing uncertainty for families
  • Showing that accommodations were thoughtfully planned, not an afterthought
  • Giving families confidence that they will be welcomed and supported
  • Indicating that there will be a community of families who understand, support, and share similar experiences
  • Creating a game day experience where families felt welcomed and supported

An Evening to Remember

The evening itself was filled with connection, awareness, and community. The provided accommodations provided a welcoming environment, and families had a blast!

As Community Organization of the Game, our Founder and Executive Director, Lynne Shaffer, had the opportunity to take part in a pre-game interview and throw out the first pitch, making the night even more memorable for our team.

The Senators also incorporated several thoughtful features, such as a free Kid Zone presented by the Rothrock Foundation, the unveiling of the new UCP Central PA Sensory Room, and opportunities for families to explore resources in a supportive and welcoming setting at the Community Resource Fair.

Why Sensory-Friendly Events Really Matter

Sensory-friendly events like this are so important because they create environments where families feel safe, understood, and truly welcomed. Children are able to participate in ways that meet their individual needs, while families can enjoy meaningful experiences together without barriers. These moments also help build community by bringing together people who share similar experiences and understand the importance of accessibility and inclusion.

Let’s Connect!

We are grateful to have been part of such a meaningful event and even more excited to see continued growth in inclusive experiences like this. Sensory-friendly nights remind us what is possible when communities come together to ensure every family feels included.
